Formed in 2008, Formosa has remained a strong and dependable group, not only because of their musical compatibility but also due to a strong bond of friendship that has developed over the years.
Phil and Laura have been playing together since early 2007 and continue to play weekly as an acoustic duo, with an extensive and growing repertoire. Simon and Chris have been friends for many years and have played together in several bands. This has developed their strong connection and musical synergy, which is fundamental to the band’s tight sound.
The band has invested in state-of-the-art equipment and is fully self contained with its own PA system and stage lighting, suitable for any type of event up to 400 people. Larger crowds and bigger venues have been accommodated with the help of a PA company with whom they have worked closely in the past.
Formosa regularly entertain audiences at weddings, corporate events and private parties and as experienced musicians they have performed live at many prestigious venues including: Ronnie Scotts, Blackpool Tower Ballroom, Winter Gardens, Imperial Hotel, Warner Hotels, DeVere Hotels, Village Hotels, Park Inn Hotel, The Priest House Hotel, The Djanogly Theatre and The Broadway Theatre amongst others.
Some of their current corporate clients include:
Boots UK, Royal Mail, Land Registry, Lewisham Borough Council, Adams Ltd, The Institute for Chartered Accountants and the Armed Forces
...plus many more!
Laura: Lead Vocals
Brought up listening to the great American songbook, Laura’s influences include Sinatra, Peggy, Ella and Nina. Eminent artists such as these, together with more contemporary singers, have all played a significant role in developing Laura’s intuitive style. Her inspired, versatile and unparalleled approach has widely been acknowledged as beyond her years.
Having trained professionally at the London College of Music, Laura’s involvements have included numerous recording sessions and she has performed at prestigious venues all over the UK , such as the Nottingham Playhouse & Broadway Theatre.
In addition to her current performing commitments, she is also a trained singing teacher. With an urbane style of lead vocals and stage presence, Laura fronts this outstanding collective of musicians.
Phil's consuming passion for music began at the age of seven when he started taking piano lessons with his grandfather. A little later he taught himself the guitar and joined his father's function band. He has been performing live continuously since the age of 15.
He is always keen to involve himself in musical projects and this has led to such diverse projects as writing and recording soundtracks in the studio and pit work in the theatre. However, playing live is what he enjoys the most and he has played in all kinds of groups from duos to 10-piece soul bands on keyboards, guitar, bass and drums. He also provides essential backing vocals.
He has eclectic and diverse musical tastes and has a particular penchant for Latin and Brazilian music. He also loves soul, funk and a well-crafted pop song!
